Is Hahnemannian Homeopathy
Doomed to Go into Oblivion Again?
The rejuvenation and renaissance of Homeopathy that we have been witnessing over the past thirty years seems lately doomed to take a downward turn toward a point of degeneration, confusion and, finally, even oblivion.
This downward trend is manifesting especially in USA and England where the so called "modern homeopathy" is prevalent. This is obvious from the last assault on homeopathy by the media in these countries.
It is my strong belief that Homeopathy's eventual downfall will be due mainly to a number of "artistic distortions" that are injected into the main body of knowledge by the "imagination" and "projections" of some "modern teachers" of Homeopathy. Since many of our students are receptive to the myths and stories concocted by flights of wild imagination, many so-called teachers have risen to fill this gap.
The motivation for this article comes from a critic of the book of an Indian homeopath in Simillimum, Vol. 7, No.3:
"Perhaps the most inspired section of the" [ book] " is the exposition concerning the kingdoms of the remedies — animal, plant, and mineral...based upon easily recognisable features. He has extended the doctrine of signatures far beyond any previous scope. He has boldly stated that the imprint of the remedy is detectable in the patient. I found Sankaran has entered a realm of... intuitive science"! [my exclamation mark.]
It is extremely difficult for me to understand how an arbitrary and totally imaginary translation of the symptoms of a patient into an "easily recognisable" likeness of an animal, a vegetable, a mineral or a...nosode makes for an intuitive science!
It is obvious that many interpretations can be given by a practitioner to any given symptomatology in a patient.
That would mean in a way that just because a patient is freezing and snakes are cold blooded and frozen from the cold weather we should choose a snake venom for such a patient e.g. Lachesis (which is a warm remedy aggravated by heat) instead of choosing arsenicum, hep-s, silica cistus, rhus tox etc. that are really cold remedies.
It is easy for everyone then to see the confusion that will result when a doctor tries to categorise his/her patients by "whether they look like an animal or a vegetable or a...nosode", and how wrong he/she can be in his interpretations.
Finding the Simillmum
But even if you have categorised somebody into one of these four groups, in what way will this help you to find his or her simillimum?
What will you prescribe in a case of mental disturbance when you see the desire of the patient to bite during delirium? Dog's milk, (Lac Caninum) tiger's milk? cat's milk? or a remedy that has this symptom in its provings, for instance Stramonium or Belladonna both plant remedies?
Will you prescribe Lac-can in a patient whose coughing sounds like "barking of a dog" or you will prescribe hyosc.(a plant remedy) that has this symptom as one of its great characteristic?
To claim that you can find the likeness or similarity of a patient to a vegetable, an animal, a mineral, is so subjective and allows for so many interpretations that it is totally unreliable. A serious practitioner could not possibly put at risk his patients with such nonsense.
We have had a lot of problems persuading people that Homeopathy is a Science. Now, with all this nonsense, we are once again reinforcing their arguments claiming that Homeopathy is a "non-science." Such ideas and others, which can be discussing in the future, are signs of degeneration.
Hodgepodge Mythology
If some teachers interpret homeopathic science in such a manner and others do not question their interpretation, we may soon be witnessing the transformation of this science into a kind of "hodgepodge mythology"
I am not opposed to experimentation, conjecture, pure imaginary projections or even theorising, as long as such things remain in the domain of research and observation and are not put forth as "facts" to the rest of the profession.
There is no doubt that we are living in a crazy world with farfetched ideas, where real knowledge is interspersed with confusion, projections and misinformation.
We must not forget, however, that our task, our mission, as homeopaths is to turn the craziness, disorder and confusion of our societies into some kind of sanity and order with the right remedy.
It is true that our science today has a "degree of uncertainty," a gap which may be filled with what may be called "artistic or intuitive interpretations," and everyone can supply this according to his or her own point of view or imagination.
But interpreting the sensations and feelings of a patient into something beyond their meaning and reality is a dangerous road for a homeopath to take.
We must perceive the reality of human suffering as signs and symptoms expressed by the patient and try to match it with what we know to be the pathognomonic picture of the remedy from the provings. We have to be careful not to project our own little theories or fancies when the health of a human being is at stake.
There is no doubt that homeopathy is difficult in its application and short cuts are eagerly welcomed by those of our profession who are longing for the new, the easy, the miraculous and the effortless. But such shortcuts will also have their own shortcomings, and, thus will add to the gradual demise of homeopathy.
Soon students of homeopathy with good intentions and enthusiasm will be seduced by such "artistic interpretations" and become disillusioned and disheartened when they try to put these ideas into practice.
Many will leave these ranks for safer ground, but others will leave homeopathy permanently in bitter disappointment. The long term damage done to homeopathy will be irreparable.

Miasms in Classical Homeopathy
In contemporary Homeopathy there has been a great advancement of the psychological aspects of the materia medica as well as in our understanding of how to use the mental rubrics of the repertory.
The origin of this tradition stems from aphorism 211 of The Organon of Medicine in which Samuel Hahnemann discusses the importance of the mental disposition.
"This holds good to such an extent, that the state of the disposition of the patient often chiefly determines the selection of the homoeopathic remedy, as being a decidedly characteristic symptom which can least of all remain concealed from the accurately observing physician".
With such an emphasis on the mental symptoms is there any reason to study the nature of disease, causation or the classical theory of the miasms? In contrast to this, Hahnemann points out in aphorism 5 and 206 the necessity of understanding the miasms when treating complex chronic diseases.
Can the homoeopath construct a complete picture of an individual without knowing how the chronic miasms form layers of disease within the constitution?
Can we really manage a complex chronic case without paying any attention to the primary, latent and secondary states of the fundamental miasms?
In this presentation I will attempt to approach this rather controversial subject with the help of historical documents combined with the practical experience found in the writings of the masters of our science.
Our purpose is to show that what Hahnemann taught in The Organon and The Chronic Diseases is a careful balance between pure vitalism and a deep understanding of the pathogenesis of miasmic diseases.
This middle path approach helps transcends the apparent dichotomy between the psychological and physiological aspects of our art and gives the homoeopath the tools necessary to respond to a great variety of situations.
In Search of the Fundamental Cause
From the early days of his career Samuel Hahnemann experienced great success in the treatment of acute diseases but as early as 1816 he was becoming concerned because the constitutional health of his patients seemed to be slowly declining. As he pondered the nature of this continual deterioration in his patients he began to search for a deeper understanding of the processes that lie behind chronic disease.
Of these chronic cases he lamented "their beginning was promising, the continuation less favorable, the outcome hopeless." Hahnemann began to wonder about the cause of these complicated chronic diseases that were resisting his treatment.
As he continued to administer his remedies he noticed that certain chronic patients, who responded well at first, either relapsed or slowly became more ill. Of this experience he said:
"The remedy which was serviceable the first time would prove less useful, and when repeated again it would help still less". As Hahnemann watched these patients closely he noticed that new symptoms would be added to the old ones that could be removed only "inadequately and imperfectly".
Again he would give the most appropriate homoeopathic remedy but each dose was less effective and in the end they worked "no better than weak palliatives". This left Hahnemann searching for the cause of these complicated forms of chronic disease that were resisting his treatment.
For 12 years Hahnemann quietly searched for the fundamental cause of the chronic diseases that was slowly destroying the health of his patients. The outcome of this research was published in 1828 in the first edition of his great work, The Chronic Diseases Their Peculiar Nature and their Homoeopathic Cure, commonly known as The Chronic Diseases.
Over the next 11 years he produced 4 more editions of this work that were published in 1830, 1835, 1837 and 1839. In these subsequent editions Hahnemann added new material as well as prefaces in which he gave his latest insights into preparation of the potencies and the dosage for the patient. This work was followed in 1829 by its philosophical counterpart, the 4th edition of Organon.
In these works Hahnemann made public for the first time his theory of the chronic miasms. This led to the most controversial period of Homoeopathic history as it marks the first major schism in the history of the homoeopathic school.
With the introduction of the theory of Psora and the chronic miasms, as well as the 30c potency, Hahnemann went too far for some of his more conservative followers. They were more secure with the Homoeopathy that Hahnemann practiced in his earlier years and could not adapt to the new territory into which it was expanding.
He was well aware that his new ideas were way ahead of the times, and shortly before the publication of his findings, he wrote Dr. Stapf about what he thought the reaction of his students might be.
"They will require more than six months before they recover from the fright and astonishment of this enormous, preposterous affair and will perhaps need another six months before they will believe in it. Therefore, it will probably be three years before they can make any sensible use of it".
Feeling the way he did about the reception of his own homoeopathic students, Hahnemann could only imagine what the orthodox medical community would think. Speaking of these individuals he said that he anticipated a "great uproar" among the allopaths.
All of Hahnemann's predictions did take place, only much worse than he expected!

Articles on homeopathic
Homeopathy is being attacked by the British media.
These attacks draw support from irresponsible and unjustified claims by certain teachers of homeopathy. Such claims include the use of 'dream' and 'imaginative' methods for provings.
"For prescribing some such teachers attempt to replace the laborious process of matching symptom picture and remedy with spurious theories based on 'signatures', sensations and other methods. Other irresponsible claims have also been made.
"These 'new ideas' risk destroying the principles, theory, and practice of homeopathy." — Homeopathy (2008) 97, 103-106.
Introduction
At the time homeopathy is going through the worst attack ever from the British press, we need to ask ourselves: are these attacks really justified? The attacks may be serving opportunism, vested interests or even the hatred of those opposed to homeopathy.
They may be ill-intentioned and even malign, however if we are honest, we must accept that they draw some of their arguments and ammunition from the ranks of homeopathy because of irresponsibility on our part.
I refer to outrageous statements made by some homeopaths and "modern teachers" and their "new ideas" which are destroying the principles, theory, and practice of real Hahnemannian homeopathy.
Methodology of Provings
The credibility of the provings (homeopathic pathogenetic trials) of homeopathic remedies, the corner stone of homeopathy, is today being demolished by "new ideas" concerning the ways provings could be conducted.
Certain teachers claim that there is no need for the remedies to be "proved" on humans, but instead the symptoms can simply be imagined, for instance:
It is on the mind level that group analysis can offer the greatest benefits. Once the central themes of the component elements are known it will be possible to deduce the theme of the combination remedy. 1
...and
The method of group analysis makes it possible to think about homoeopathy on a new level, an abstract, or even metaphysical, level. This enables us more or less to predict the picture of a totally unknown remedy. 2
One can easily foresee where such absurd "new ideas" will lead: hundreds of "imaginative" homeopaths will "imagine" hundreds of different "provings" for the same remedy!
There is nothing wrong in the efforts of some to attract attention through the invention of new remedies. It is however not fair, for the sake of those who rely on provings, that such authors ignore the rules according to which a correct proving is conducted, in accordance with the Principles and Practice applied by Hahnemann.
The methods that many experimenters have followed in order to "provide" provings for new remedies prove that they did not follow the directions of Hahnemann:
...a new and revolutionary method of provings, that involved making an entire group of persons take a dose of the remedy, a few days before or even during a seminar, and then discussing the effects of the dose during the seminar. They were usually very productive in terms of symptomatology, especially in the emotional sphere in the dreams, which gave an idea of the inner processes of the substance.
I was impressed by the effect that the dose had on the collective group consciousness, and how, when taken collectively, the effect of the dose seemed to multiply and become much more prominent than when given on an individual basis. 3
A proving can be conducted with a study group or at a seminar by having each student take a single dose a few days before or during the class, then comparing experiences. These provings often concentrate on dreams and mental symptoms in an endeavour to uncover the deeper meaning of the remedy.
This method has been practiced extensively by Jürgen Becker in Germany and adopted by other contemporary teachers. The idea is to discover the main unconscious theme of the remedy during the seminar proving. This is further enhanced by discussing the experience with the group to air and formulate the central ideas.
The advantage of this method is that it may be a short cut to an inner essence of the remedy. 4
At the School of Homeopathy, where we meet once a month, we have achieved results in group provings since 1991 using a variety of stimuli: by using material substance; by holding it; by looking at it; and by meditating upon it. We have achieved results with potencies from 30C to 200C.
We have invoked group provings by one member holding the concept/image of a thing in their mind (the sender) while the group has sat in a period of silence and self-observation (the receivers).
It is common experience amongst provers that certain individuals (who later reveal cardinal symptoms because of their affinity to the substance under test) develop symptoms which subsequently are confirmed as belonging to the proving before anyone else had 'taken' the substance.' 5
For me the meditation proving is often the most convenient and helpful. It gives results fast and with little effort. The disadvantages are that the picture will not be complete and can be incorrect in parts. But that can also be the case with other provings. In my experience, meditation provings often are quite reliable and give the essence of the remedy, more so than dream provings. 6
The enthusiasm to "bring out" symptoms has led to claims that even one dose of a high potency can produce hundreds of symptoms in a small group of people. 'The proving of Coca-Cola was conducted during my San Francisco seminar in May, 1994. The participants of the seminar were given one dose of the drug in the 30C potency. They were instructed to note their symptoms over the next 2 days, whether they took the dose or not. 7
Out of 305 mental symptoms in hydrogen, 61 were produced by the 6th potency (2 provers), 17 by the 9th potency (1 prover), 27 by the 12th potency (3 provers), 3 by the 15th potency (2 provers), 140 by the 30th potency (3 provers) and 56 by the 200th potency (4 provers). 8
"The remedy is made up into a 30C potency. All provers start at approximately the same time and day by taking one dose." 9
Most of these "experimenters" probably had not read and appreciated that Hahnemann used only material doses in the provings on which his Materia Medica Pura is based.
Paragraph 32 of the Organon10 states that all "substances can produce symptoms as long as they are taken in large enough quantities." In the sixth and final edition of the Organon paragraph 130, he states that only those sensitive to a substance can have symptoms from a high potency and this only if they take the remedy every day for several days. 11
In order to establish symptoms are reliable and are due to the remedy the experiment has to be repeated several times. In daily practice we often prescribe the wrong remedy yet "proving" symptoms are seldom seen. This fact alone shows the scarcity of such "sensitive persons" that could prove remedies in high potency.
Some have even claimed that there is no need for a real remedy. You can write the name of the remedy and the potency in a piece of paper, put a glass of water over it and the potentised remedy is prepared!
I had been having my patients write the remedy and potency on a piece of paper for years and it works like a charm. Because we are working with energy and spirit, our INTENT of what we set out to do is critical to it behaving as we expect it to behave, i.e., if you write Lachesis 30C on the paper and the person with the hot flashes stops having them, then the homeopath must be focused and concentrated in her/his gathering of this energy. 12
Or that you do not even need to give the remedy, you just have to think about it and the patient is cured!
I was taught intent was everything. And, of course, we see a patient in the midst of our case taking suddenly begin to get better once we think of the remedy for them. At least I do. 12
With such statements how is it possible to defend against the idea that homeopathy is nothing but "placebo" effect?
Selecting the Remedy
The second important issue raised by this storm of "modernisation" is distortion of the essential methodology through which the remedy is chosen. Some "modern teachers" claim to have found ways to cut short the laborious work required to find the remedy that matches with the symptoms of the patient.
They suggest, for instance: finding the delusions of each person and prescribe accordingly.
I also realized the importance of the section on delusions, because a delusion is a false perception of reality, and disease too is a false perception of the present. The whole mental state of a person is an expression of this false perception (delusion).
Cure is the restoration of health. It is achieved when man becomes aware of his false perception of reality. This is made possible through exposing him to his delusion. This is the basis of the Law of similars on which Homoeopathy is founded. 13
In other words, they guide the naive and credulous student to locate a delusion in each patient! Others suggest prescribing only according to mental symptoms:
To repeat, let me point out that we prescribe on the symptoms of the mind (leaving aside all the other symptoms relating to the popularly known physical level of the body) and in turn get a stimulus in the automatic system, which is responsible for keeping the system of Assimilation and Elimination efficient. 14
Even though many patients suffer only physical symptoms and don't necessarily have psychological symptoms, let alone delusions. Within this wave of spurious theory and oversimplification, others suggest grouping patients according to some "common" characteristics, ignoring the principle of uniqueness of each organism. 15
They teach, for example, that the student should explore whether if the patient has similarities with an animal, or plant, or mineral, and accordingly look into the corresponding group of remedies to find the similimum. 16
This is essentially the old idea of "signatures" abandoned as useless hundreds of years ago, now presented as an enlightened modern solution for easily finding the indicated remedy. In reality what is suggested is the abandonment of the process of finding the correct remedy through repertorisation and searching the materia medica.
Hahnemann's opinion about these ideas was very clear:
I shall spare the ordinary medical school the humiliation of reminding it of the folly of those ancient physicians who, determining the medicinal powers of crude drugs from their signature. 17
The failure of this method is one of the main reasons why Hahnemann sought a more logical way of curing people and why he developed homeopathy.
Subsequently another point of view has manifested: that each patient corresponds to one and only homeopathic remedy, the "core" remedy which has to be found, else the patient would not be cured, ignoring the fact that in deep miasmatic diseases, as are the most of cases today, a series of homeopathic remedies prescribed in sequence, at long intervals, are necessary in order to accomplish a cure.
It is my experience that if you find the remedy that is really at the deepest level, they will do very well on it for many years. Usually at the end of that time they are so healthy they don't need any other remedy. Otherwise, you will just get a partial effect, but you have not really got it.
As Hahnemann said, you are zigzagging towards cure and I can't do that very often, it makes me dizzy! If you go the depth of the person, you see the main switch, which in one flick makes all the individual bulbs light up. 18
When we prescribe the remedy to a patient on the basis of the Primary Psoric Hypothesis, with the precise Themes and Guiding Motives, we must expect that cure will manifest as a quantum leap. 19
Sensations and Delusions
Another recent idea that, I am afraid, will prolong the confusion of students is that of the projection by the practitioner of a supposedly underlying "context" of the "sensations" of the patient, to something beyond their meaning and reality.
Another key component of this system has to do with becoming attuned to the patient's sensations. There is a certain energy in precise sensation(s) having to do with both the chief complaint and the general state of the patient which has enormous significance. Dr. Sankaran has termed these as the vital sensations.
Vital sensations are not merely physical symptoms or emotions, but rather the common sensations that connect the mind and the body. Indeed the vital level is deeper than the mind or the body; it is at the center point of the diseased state.
These are non human specific phenomena i.e. not exclusive to the domain of only human beings and thus take us directly to the source of the remedy itself. 20
Projecting the "sensations" of the patient is a slippery path for a homeopath to take because these "projections" are not recorded in the materia medica, and every practitioner will be tempted to find another underlying "context" in the feelings of the patient. The fact is that we have to match the patient's symptoms to the remedy proving symptoms and for such a work we have both tools and rules.
The rest is mere conjecture that allows the ridiculing of homeopathy as has appeared recently in the British press.
These extreme ideas create confusion in the minds of uninformed students and at the same time gave ammunition to the foes of homeopathy.
Dangerous Ideas
Other still more dangerous "new ideas" have also surfaced; for instance, the homeopathic version of vaccination. This originated from a misunderstanding of the idea of Hahnemann that Belladonna, for instance, could act therapeutically during an epidemic of scarlet fever, not as a preventive but because it was the "genius" of that epidemic and acted curatively at the beginning of the infection.
This observation was taken to mean that we can give someone a remedy today and it will protect him/her from a prospective epidemic which might break out a year or two later. 21
Other ideas followed that only fanatics of a religious sect could adopt: like "homeopathy can cure everything even all forms of cancer or AIDS" 22 or even worse "potentise musical tunes,23 or the light of Venus or the moon 24 and give it as a remedy!"
Then some homeopaths, misled by such ideas, claim to have found a cure for AIDS like a musical tune played by a CD 'Healing Downloads are a form of holistic self-healing based upon resonance for a wide range of illnesses and diseases. They are based on a breakthrough that came about while applying a neglected part of homeopathy to the treatment of AIDS and Malaria in Africa. We discovered a new way of healing based on time-tested homeopathic principles and practices but with a new form of delivery.' 25
And they call such nonsense classical homeopathy! With all these irrational and arbitrary "new ideas" the "modern teachers" are defaming homeopathy and demolishing the corner stones that constitute its scientific edifice. So it is not without reason that scientists reacted badly, that the media launched a war against homeopathy and the opponents of homeopathy are at this moment celebrating.
Conclusion
The attacks of the British media have influenced the perception of whole homeopathy all over the world. I foresee that this will continue and irrespective of the obvious vested interests they serve. But the sad reality is that they are not without justification.
The great edifice of scientific credence in homeopathy that was built with so much labour in so many years by so many committed people is now crumbling as we, the homeopathic community, are providing the arguments that homeopathy is not a science. Real knowledge is interspersed with confusion and misinformation, hard work is replaced by projection; and self-interest is presented as altruistic teaching.
However this is life: where there is light, there are also shadows. There are today enough sane homeopaths who can turn the craziness, disorder and confusion into order and sanity, but they must speak out. This journal should be part of such a proactive movement defending the essence and substance of the theories and principles bequeathed to us by Samuel Hahnemann.

See one of my AdSense checks from April, 2006.
[Note: Today, I earn much more than the amount on that check. The reason I do not have a more recent check to display is Google pays me by direct deposit now.]
----------------------
Anyone who owns or is thinking about creating a website would be crazy to ignore this.
I am happy to say that making money with your site, no matter the topic, has become easier than it's ever been before - and it's 100% legitimate.
If AdSense had been available in 2000, I would have NEVER shut down my soap opera fan site that received 200 hits per day. I would have been able to earn money from that traffic and probably turned a small profit.
Untold Facts About AdSense you need to know in order to succeed with the program!
Yes, the money can be great, but if you don't learn how to build a site that attracts targeted traffic then you won't make much from AdSense.
Don't pay a cent for these "Get Rich Quick" books on AdSense. Many of them are all hype. Learn all you need to know for free.

What is AdSense?
Google.com earns most of its revenue by allowing other website owners to advertise on their search result pages. All this is managed through a program they call AdWords.
Now you can earn a share of the revenue that Google earns from AdWords by displaying these same text ads on your site. In other words, you're helping Google advertise and they pay you a percentage of what they earn.
This program is called AdSense.
Every website owner should at least consider the program. Even if your site is just for information purposes, you can still participate and make decent money with AdSense -- or at least enough to fund your website.
So if you are one of those people that doesn't like the idea of paying for a site, this is an excellent way to earn your money back and then some.
How AdSense Works
Don't like to read a lot of text? Watch my 4-minute video on how AdSense works.
"Is Google Crazy?"
I know what you're probably thinking...
"What's the catch here? Why would Google just give away money advertisers are paying them?"
The answer...
Because Google is very smart.
If you understand how AdSense works, you will see that it's a win-win situation for everyone involved, and the bottom line benefits Google. Let me explain...
Since the advertiser's ads are now being displayed on more web sites all over the internet (instead of just Google's site), they are getting much more exposure. More exposure means more clicks and even more traffic for their site over a shorter period of time.
This is good news for Google because the more traffic the advertisers receive, the faster their advertising funds are used up.
Remember, they get charged every time their site gets a visit; and of course, it is Google's hope that they'll continue to keep funneling more money into their account for more ad exposure.
What an ingenious way for Google to increase the amount of money they earn from advertisers while building loyalty with website owners (like us) who are now getting paid to help them advertise.
Of course, I'd expect nothing less from the most popular search engine on the web. :)
My Personal AdSense Story
I have been receiving monthly checks from Google since 2003, and I've read numerous success stories of websites earning 5 digit incomes per month with AdSense.
Now, I will admit, a 5-digit commission in a single month is probably not the norm for most participants.
I promote AdSense on three of my websites and my checks have been as high as $4,800.
The more information you have, the greater chance you have of attracting free search engine traffic. That's why it's so very important you choose a topic you have an interest in so you can keep building and building.
My checks weren't always that large. I think my first month's earnings in 2003 totaled less than $20. However, I kept getting more and more search engine traffic by adding more content and the checks slowly began to increase. I had no idea it would grow to anything like this.
Watch Video About My Record AdSense Month in July, 2009
"How Much Can I Earn With AdSense?"
Google does not disclose exactly how much you'll earn per ad that is clicked.
The commission you receive per click depends on how much advertisers are paying Google for the particular ad. You will earn a share of that amount. I've heard of earnings anywhere from 2 cents to $15 per click.
So it is logical to believe that keyword phrases like debt free, employment, make money, mp3, sex, etc. will earn you more per click since these are highly competitive keywords that are searched for quite a bit on the web.
Advertisers generally pay more for popular terms because they are searched for more.
Even though Google will not reveal how much you are earning for each ad that is clicked from your site, you can still login to your account at any time and see the total amount of revenue you've generated that day, week, month, year, etc.
For example, if you see that you've made $12.60 today from 9 clicks then you can calculate that your average click-thru commission was $1.40 per click. That's as detailed as their stats will get. Also remember, that's only an average. You won't know how much each specific ad brought in.
The amount you'll earn also depends largely on the amount of targeted traffic you receive to your own site, how well the ads match your audience's interests, the placement of the ads on your pages, and of course the amount you receive per click.
Ideally, you should create a site on a topic you know a lot about. That way you'll have a much easier time creating a generous amount of content on that subject.
Why I Believe AdSense Works So Well
For years, website owners have tried to make money from their sites by putting up banner ads in hopes of visitors clicking them. The problem with banner ads is that the Internet audience is so immune to them, people do not click on them anymore.
When's the last time you clicked a banner ad?
...Exactly!
Second, in order for the web site owner to earn money from that banner ad, usually the web surfer that clicks has to purchase something. With AdSense, your visitors just have to click the ads. They don't have to purchase a single thing.
Third, most people that use banner ads do not do a good job of matching the ads to the website's content so the click thru percentages are dismal.
With Google's AdSense, not only are you displaying text ads, (which tend to receive a much higher click-thru rate than banner ads), but you are displaying contextual ads that match your website's content....thanks to Google's advanced technology.
Lots of times people think the ads are part of your site's content so they click because the information is relevant to your site. Whereas with banner ads, they often have little relevance and people tend to ignore them no matter how much they flash and fly across the page.
Creating Your Website for AdSense
Before you even begin your site, make sure you've come up with a topic that you feel you know plenty about. That way it will be easiest to write a lot of content.
The more content you have, the better chance you have getting accepted into the program. Also, the more content, the greater the earning potential. AdSense is nothing but a numbers game. If you want to make a lot of money, prepare to write a lot of content.
Now let's talk about building your website. There are two ways you can approach this:
1) Do it Yourself (DIY) from scratch
2) Use Site Build It! (SBI!)
The Do It Yourself Method
I've actually used both methods for building my site and there are advantages and disadvantages to both.
If you use the DIY method, you will have to go and register a domain name (yoursite.com) and then sign up for a web host and build your pages. You can either learn HTML or buy some kind of web editor like Microsoft FrontPage to build your pages. That's the method I used to build this site.
Averaging between $7 and $15 per month, the DIY method is usually the most cost friendly of the two but you are mostly on your own in terms of learning how to create your web pages and adding the AdSense code to your site.
Web hosts are generally there to house your site. They don't specialize in helping you market and optimize your site for the search engines to help you get traffic. So don't expect a lot from them in terms of helping you market your site.
This is not necessarily a bad thing. I had to learn how to build this site on my own and it wasn't very difficult.
I now manage all of my sites with Dreamweaver.
Use Site Build It! - A Web Host Made for AdSense
This is a revolutionary web host like no other. I use it for my site, flat-stomach-exercises.com, and after only 11 months the site was earning over $700 per month for AdSense alone.
Two years after launch, the total monthly earnings shot up to $2,000 to $2,500.
Today, the site continues to earn money from AdSense yet I have no products to sell. I'm simply offering information on a topic I know a lot about and SBI showed me how to rank high in the search engines for various keyword phrases. Over 90% of traffic comes from the free search engines.
The reason SBI is different from the other do-it-yourself hosts is that first it provides all the web page building and marketing help all in one place. Your domain registration, web hosting and marketing help come with the price..
Super Easy Web Page Builder
Creating your pages is as simple as entering text into form fields and using the user-friendly editor to add text, create links, add pictures and more. No software is needed to install or download. You simply select a template you want to use and your site is built in seconds...literally.
I took a screenshot of the SBI! interface...
Free Guides
What's even better is that you will have access to tons of free guides that show you how to optimize your site for the popular search engines so you can get as much free traffic as possible.
Remember, without traffic, you won't make any money with AdSense. That's why having a host like SBI is so important. Keep in mind, a regular DIY host does NOT help you with search engine rankings and traffic.
Brainstorming Tool
Site Build It also comes with a powerful brainstorming tool. So for all of you sitting there wondering about a topic, this tool literally scours the net and helps you decide on the best topic by showing demand and supply (i.e. number of sites on X topic and roughly how feasible it will be to bring in traffic for that particular subject). It is amazing.
The creator of Site Build It even built a micro site that describes how to maximize your AdSense earnings. And since Site Build It's main goal is to show you how to build income through content...it's almost as if AdSense was designed specifically for a web host like SBI.
See the SiteSell AdSense site here.
I highly recommend using SBI -- especially if you plan on building a site specifically to earn money from AdSense. It is the kind of host that stands for everything AdSense is about -- rewarding website owners for building an abundance of useful content.
Even though the two companies are not related, it really is the perfect marriage between a great concept like AdSense and a web host that is dedicated to showing you how to make money by simply providing information.
Successful SBI Websites
Be sure to also take a peek at all the successful SBI websites created by mostly beginners who have never created a site before. Every site listed on this page is in the top 3% in terms of amount of traffic received on the web - thanks to the SBI search engine help.
Find out why I think SBI! is best for AdSense.
How to Join AdSense
In late 2008, Google tightened up their acceptance policies. According to an email I received from someone who was trying to join the program, you now must meet the following criteria before you are accepted...
- Your website must be your own top-level domain (www.domain.com and not domain.com/mysite). That means you can't just sign up with a free blogger or free web hosting account and get approved for AdSense.
- Your domain name must have been registered and active for at least 6 months before you apply
- The registration information that you provide during the AdSense registration must match your domain name registration information
- Your website must contain a substantial amount of original content
Once you meet the above criteria, go to http://adsense.google.com to apply.
When you are accepted, simply copy and paste the provided HTML code into any page that you'd like to show the ads. If you've done a good job of defining the content on your web pages, the ads that show should be relevant to the content of your page...increasing the chances of click-thrus by your visitors.
You can either display the ads vertically along side the page like Google does or in a banner-like formation horizontally across your pages. The placement is up to you. You can even customize the colors to match your site's theme.
If Your Site Is Rejected by Google...
If you receive that email from Google stating that your site has not been accepted, the first thing you should remember is that as an AdSense member, you become a partner and are representing Google, Inc.
They have to make sure the websites that display these ads are up to par or they could run the risk of losing advertisers. Imagine if you were paying Google to display your ad and you found it showing up on a poorly developed, junky website.
Of course, if your site is rejected, it doesn't mean it is poorly developed. There may be other reasons:
1) Is your site an "About Me" page?
Google does not usually accept these kinds of personal sites because most of them do not have a specific topic or theme. They are usually just random facts about the website owner or their hobbies, pictures, etc.
It would be difficult for Google's technology to display targeted ads on these kinds of pages because the topics vary from subject to subject.
They are looking for "themed" sites that contain a generous amount of information on a specific topic. It could be anything from sewing tips to sports. Just make sure there is an obvious theme with adequate information.
2) Is your site organized?
Be sure your site has a neat and clean navigation that's easy to follow. Also ensure all the links work and that there are no typos. Keep the colors to a minimum and make sure each page has a consistent layout.
3) How many pages are on your site?
Even though Google doesn't specify a page number requirement, many believe they are looking for web sites with a certain amount of content. Again, it's not likely a two-page site will get accepted. Try to strive for at least 15 pages.
4) Is your content solid?
Don't just submit a website with a bunch of links to other sites. Be sure you have a themed/niche site with enough original content of your own.
5) Is your site an exact carbon copy of someone else's?
Some believe Google can find out if your site is original or not. Don't risk it and steal from someone else. It will come back to haunt you.
If you're stuck, write a few articles of your own and then go to sites like www.articlecity.com and sprinkle a few of their articles around your site to beef it up.
6) Be sure to read their program policy and procedures carefully and make sure your site hasn't violated any of the terms.
Tips on Succeeding With AdSense
Here are some tips for achieving success with AdSense.
1. Create a website with your (YourSite.com). Don't try to use a free web host because your site will likely have banners and pop-ups and get rejected because it looks unprofessional. Not to mention, a free web host will give you a website address like this:
http://thefreewebhost.com/yoursite/member1234/home.html
instead of...

Thanks to the policies implemented in late 2008, AdSense no longer accepts sites created on free domains anyway. So may as well register your own domain.
2. If you don't know web programming or have no desire to learn it, get a beginner's design editor like Dreamweaver (what I use) or CoffeeCup. You can publish your content directly to the web from the software.
Keep in mind you can't use the software alone. You must have a web host that will allow you to publish your site to the Internet. (More on web hosting in a sec.)
3. If the main goal of your site is to make money with AdSense, be sure to choose a topic that you know a lot about so you can write lots and lots of content.
4. Get traffic. Once your site is up and running you'll need to learn how to get your site listed in the major search engines.
Getting into Google is completely free and can bring in hundreds or even thousands of visitors per day. All you have to do is submit your site to them and wait patiently while Google adds it to the index. It can take a few months. Patience is key with Google. Then do the same with Yahoo, MSN, etc.
Read up on how the search engines rank pages here.
And while you're waiting it's important you build up as much unique content around your theme as possible. Google loves large sites with useful content centered around a specific theme.
Don't create a hodgepodge site with topics on everything under the sun. Stay focused and make sure your site has an obvious theme.
5. Partner up with other related sites and participate in link swaps. This means that you place a link to another person's site on your own site and they do the same for you in return. This is a great way to get even more free traffic.

Not to mention, a free web host will give you a website address like this:
http://thefreewebhost.com/yoursite/member1234/home.html
instead of...
http://www.yoursite.com
Thanks to the policies implemented in late 2008, AdSense no longer accepts sites created on free domains anyway. So may as well register your own domain.
2. If you don't know web programming or have no desire to learn it, get a beginner's design editor like Dreamweaver (what I use) or CoffeeCup. You can publish your content directly to the web from the software.
